In a new sizzle reel promoting HBO Max that debuted during the Emmy Awards last night, the public got their first look at footage from the upcoming Peacemaker series. This series is a spinoff from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and is created by Gunn, with Gunn also set to direct five of the episodes.
The brief footage showed Peacemaker aka Christopher Smith (John Cena) arriving at a restaurant, fully decked out in his uniform. This is followed by Cena participating in some wild target practice where he shoots the peace logo into a piece of metal. While the Peacemaker series has been confirmed for a while, Cena’s performance in The Suicide Squad was a highlight for many, building anticipation for his return in this series.
The Peacemaker is an anti-hero, a character whose goal is peace but will kill anyone in his way to get to it. He clearly has no sense of irony. In addition to Cena, the series is also starring Steve Agee, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, and Chukwudi Iwuji.
The HBO Max promo included footage for a lot of the service’s upcoming content including new seasons for Succession, Euphoria, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Insecure. There are also Max Originals highlighted like The Sex Lives of College Girls, And Just Like That: A New Chapter of Sex And The City, and Gossip Girl, along with teasers for day-and-date movie releases like King Richard, Dune, and The Matrix Resurrections.
Peacemaker is expected to premiere on HBO Max in January 2022 and will consist of eight episodes in its first season. HBO Max is the headquarters for all things DC and recently started streaming the first season of the CW’s Superman & Lois. The Suicide Squad did recently leave the service, but is still in theaters and will return to HBO Max at a later date.
