While GoldenEye 007 back on the Nintendo 64 was a game-changing FPS, the game has had some trouble when it comes to being brought up to date on current platforms. Things have proven to be tricky due to licencing between Nintendo and Microsoft since Microsoft acquired GoldenEye developer Rare in the early 2000’s, which ended up being the downfall of a very promising-looking remake for the game.
Rare had been working on a remake for GoldenEye 007 for the Xbox Live Arcade in 2008, and they had actually made a lot of progress on the project. The visuals received a very nice update, and the game even allowed you to swap back and forth between the original graphics and the updated graphics. The game was running at a smooth 60fps, and Rare was even set to add 3 new multiplayer stages to the game in the form of Dam, Frigate and Depot.
It wasn’t meant to be, though, and the project was eventually canceled. However, thanks to Rare Thief we now have 30 minutes of gameplay to check out featuring this canceled remake. The video features several missions from the original game with the aforementioned improvements listed above, and seeing it in action really makes it hurt even more that this project never panned out.
GoldenEye 007 would eventually go on to get a re-imagining in the form of GoldenEye 007 on Wii in 2010, before then bring brought to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011. The game stars Daniel Craig rather than Pierce Brosnan, however, and features many alterations from the original game. Check out footage of the canceled XBLA remake below.
