Ah, Dungeons and Dragons. The king of tabletop games, alive and stronger than ever. With it celebrating its 45th anniversary just a couple of years ago, the franchise is keeping busy. Fans old and new alike have had the 5th edition of the game for years now. Though there are many differing opinions about it, one thing is for sure. It is at the forefront of the modern spike in the success of the game. With the popularity has come a constant stream of new content recently. Some are mini-campaigns like Rime of the Frostmaiden, others are sourcebooks to fill out the 5e world. The latest sourcebook from Wizards of the Coast focuses on, well, the dragons part of Dungeons and Dragons. Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons finally expands the dragon lore of the 5th edition. Let’s take a look at what’s inside!
Fizban Adds New Character Options
Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons brings us a handful of new character-based options. To start, the Dragonborn race has gotten a bit of a buff. Not only are Dragonborn racial traits boosted a bit, but we also have a new kind entirely. The Gem Dragonborn now joins the ranks alongside the usual Chromatic and Metallic. They hold more psychic and mind-based powers with their iconic Breath Weapons, and can even use telepathy a bit. To boot, Chromatic Dragonborns have gained some extra warding against their special damage type of choice. Lastly, Metallic Dragonborns gain some additional effects for their Breath Weapons, incapacitating or pushing foes with them.
Dragonborns aren’t the only lucky ones in this Dungeons and Dragons sourcebook though. The Drakewarden Ranger and Way of Ascendant Dragon Monk are now official material, coming off the Unearthed Arcana playtesting fields. Though they’ve been understandably tweaked/nerfed a bit, it’s exciting for many fans. Drakewarden gives Rangers a dragon companion to fight alongside and eventually ride. Way of the Ascendant Dragon brings a draconic aura and presence to the Monk’s fluid fighting style. Last but not least, new feats are in place from each type of dragon! Now everyone can have fun with dragon powers if they please.
Much to See and Much in Store
Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons is the second of three new sourcebooks coming out in the second half of 2021. Beyond all the new character options, it also gives a detailed look at the Draconomicon, a compendium of dragons in the 5th edition. It gives illumination on how to run dragons and make them a Dungeon Master’s big bad. Players and Dungeon Masters alike are sure to enjoy it. With so much coming out, it seems like the 5th edition will live forever, but recent news says otherwise. A few weeks ago, it was announced that a new edition is in store for the 50th anniversary of the game in 2024. Whether this is more of a 5.5 edition or a 6th edition is unknown so far.
