Today through the Nintendo Direct-like ‘Indie World Showcase’ stream, Nintendo announced a bunch of indie games releasing on Switch from today to 2021. Some of the titles showcased in the stream are games with management or base-building systems. Interestingly, one of them is playable today right after Indie World Showcase ends. Let’s take a look at these base-building Nintendo Switch indie games you shouldn’t miss out on.

5. Spiritfarer

In this “cozy management” indie game, you play as Stella, a Spiritfarer — a ferry master to the deceased. While building your ferry to sail around the world, you will befriend and care for spirits before releasing them into the afterlife. You can also bring a friend to your voyage thanks to its two-player local cooperative mode. Spiritfarer is available to grab on the Nintendo Switch right now.

4. Bear & Breakfast

As its ‘bed-and-breakfast’ pun name stands, in this indie game, you play as a bear named Hank who finds an abandoned shack in the middle of the woods and decided to turn it into an inn to make money off of unsuspecting tourists. Individually customize rooms, keep guests happy to maintain your reputation, and don’t forget to complete quests for new items for your inn. As you expand your business, you have to explore deep into the darkness of the forests and uncover a plot deeper than the wilderness itself. Bear & Breakfast is launching on Nintendo Switch in 2021. PC version via Steam is still listed as “Soon”.

3. Subnautica (+ Below Zero DLC)

The popular base-building, nautical-themed survival game is finally coming to Switch in “early 2021”. It includes the standalone expansion, Below Zero, that opens up an arctic region of planet 4546B. Adding new icy biomes from snow-covered peaks to icy caves and creatures such as the giant Titan Holefish, the aggressive Brute Shark, and the adorable Pengwings to Subnautica.

2. Garden Story

As the Guardian of The Grove island, it is up to you to protect its inhabitants, gather precious materials, and solve various problems happening in your community. But your job is not just taking requests from villagers and rebuilding the town, there are infectious Rots that you have to clean up from the island! Garden Story for Nintendo Switch is set to release in 2021. Though if you want to take a quick peek, a demo is available on Steam.

1. Torchlight III

I’m putting this one to the last spot since it is primarily a hack-and-slash game just like Diablo. But since Torchlight III is adding a ‘Fort customization‘ feature for the first time in the series, I think it counts as a “base-building”. You will be able to decorate your home base with decorative items you craft yourself or gained from loot and visit other players’ Forts. The game will be released in fall this year for the Switch.
