Johnson’s Black Adam was originally set to appear in the Shazam movie but, the decision was eventually made to give the character his own solo movie.

While the movie’s plot has been relatively kept under wraps, we do know who Black Adam will be facing off against. In 2020, it was revealed that the film will feature the Justice Society of America (JSA). Black Adam was supposed to release in December 2021. However, along with so many other projects, the DC film was delayed due to the pandemic. Back in July, Johnson announced (via Instagram) that the movie had finally wrapped filming:

Black Adam stars Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam, Pierce Brosnan as Kent Nelson/Dr. Fate, Sarah Shahi as Adrianna Tomaz, Aldis Hodge as Carter Hall/Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Al Rothstein/Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindell as Maxine Hunkell/Cyclone. The film is expected to hit theaters on July 29, 2022.

I knew many years ago, the opportunity for me to make BLACK ADAM would be a ONCE IN A CAREER EVENT.

It has been my true honor to go shoulder to shoulder with over 1,000 brilliant and hungry crew of filmmakers and storytellers to bring the antihero known as, BLACK ADAM to life.

This has been one for the ages and easily the hardest labor and toughest grind mentally and physically of my entire career.

Worth. Every. Second.”
