According to a press release, Square Enix is further investing on Luminous Productions, the developer behind Final Fantasy XV.

As a result of this process, the publisher has informed investors that there’s been an extraordinary loss of $33 million in the last six months.

Interestingly, the developer is being implemented in order to “focus (…) development efforts on large-scale, high-quality AAA game titles.”

“Having conducted an in-depth review of the business strategy for Luminous Productions Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary (the “Subsidiary”), the Company had decided to focus the Subsidiary’s development efforts on large-scale, high-quality AAA game titles, which best leverages the Subsidiary’s strengths,” the press release mentions.

“This decision has resulted in the booking of an extraordinary loss amounting to 3,733 million yen, including the disposition of the portion of the content production account related to the game titles under development at the Subsidiary and impairment losses on intangible assets, in the Company’s financial results for the six-month period ended September 30, 2018.”

Luminous Productions has been officially established last March, but had already existed before that foundation window as the team of Final Fantasy XV.

It’s being led by game director Hajime Tabata. Tabata had already revealed his will to work on a brand new IP and there’s a chance this is it, but we can’t rule the possibility of a full-fledged Final Fantasy XVI out at the moment.
