Final Fantasy has gone through many iterations since it’s inception. From sprite based JRPGs, sprawling open world games, mobile iterations, and blockbuster films, Square Enix has attempted to make the series bigger across multiple mediums. Today, Square Enix and Sony Pictures Television announced that Final Fantasy will be hitting yet another platform, television. A series based around the massive online title, Final Fantasy XIV is in the works in partnership with Square Enix, Sony Pictures Television and Hivemind.
Hivemind may not immediately stand out as a big name in the entertainment business, but they do have a notable connection to another massive video game to television project. Hivemind is most known for the work that they are currently doing with Netflix to bring The Witcher to the streaming service this year.
It is still yet to be announced exactly what the show will be about, but it will be set in Eorzea, the sprawling world seen in Final Fantasy XIV and will likely include many nods to the characters and locations that the show will be based on. The show will be fully live-action rather than the CGI based entertainment that Square Enix has dabbled with in the past.
Final Fantasy has been around since the ’80s, giving Square Enix a lot of options for what they can pull from for their first foray into live action television. The decision to base this upcoming series on the 14th entry may have some fans scratching their head in confusion. Rest assured, the world of XIV is rich with fantastic lore, jaw-dropping locations, and magical scenarios for the eventual showrunners to pull from.
As very little information was shared, we will have to wait on a release window and launch platforms for a later date. Make sure to check back to The Nerd Stash for all future updates on the Final Fantasy TV series.
