The worst part about playing an MMO is waiting for maintenance to end. But for Final Fantasy XIV fans, a full day’s maintenance was made even worse as it was extended by over an hour. Even worse, the website maintenance extended an additional hour, meaning The Lodestone, Final Fantasy XIV’s main hub and community page, was down for over 26 hours.

The maintenance was to implement FFXIV patch 6.18. This seemingly small patch had two major changes: A Data Center redistribution and the addition of Data Center travel. These server-based changes were highly complex, meaning that 24 hours of maintenance was required. In comparison, patch maintenance usually takes around five or six hours (often overnight) and is finished early.

As a result, the 26+ hours of maintenance were unusual. The official Final Fantasy XIV news Twitter made sure to keep players apprised of the issues. Still, players who couldn’t wait to try the new Data Center travel system, or join new servers, were still impatient.

Waiting for maintenance to end is like standing in line at an amusement park at the best of times. But when there are new features to enjoy, it can be super frustrating. Luckily, as of writing, the maintenance seems to be fully complete with no more waiting, and players are braving the new cross-Data Center travel system.
