Good news for bunny boy fans, as Final Fantasy XIV developer Square Enix released a highly detailed post today about male Viera naming conventions on their official forums. The post lists a considerable number of names for male Viera and lots of information about Viera culture and lore.
Final Fantasy XIV players often like to name their characters lore-appropriate names, especially as the game’s naming system demands a first and last name. And while sometimes a deeply fantastical name like “Huorlwesfv Kisne” may clash with some of the more outlandish MMO names on show in FFXIV, it’s nice to have the information.
The post also reveals some really fascinating information about Viera society. In particular, Viera’s male or female characteristics are not present at birth, so Viera parents will often name their children a gender-neutral “forest name.” When a Viera becomes an adult, they either choose a traditional masculine or feminine name. But they are equally likely to reject these norms or even keep their “forest name.”
These kinds of small details are sure to be a hit with Final Fantasy XIV’s diverse and engaged fan base. Beyond this, the Viera names of both the Rava and Veena clans are inspired by Icelandic naming conventions, but this new information has given them a life of their own.
Overall, small lore dumps that have a very light in-game effect but can help build player engagement are what really make Final Fantasy XIV special. There’s no need to name your Viera the “proper” way. But if you want to, there’s now an incredibly valuable resource for you.
