After Final Fantasy XV,‘s release, the Final Fantasy franchise seemed like they were drifting away from turn-based combat. Final Fantasy XV used real-time action-style gameplay. Therefore, with the critical and finical success of XV, it seemed safe to assume Square Enix will be moving away from the traditional system for the time being.
Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced as an action-oriented game similarly to XV. The new mechanics give players full control of their character. For instance, the player controls the character’s attacks and blocks in real-time. One of the main points of combat is to fill up an ATB meter. Once the meter is filled, the player enters tactical mode. In tactical mode the player can choose to do more powerful attacks.
FF VII Remake was announced as an action game. Seemingly confirming Square was done with turn-based combat. However, it was announced that FF VII Remake will include a classic mode. The classic mode makes all the player’s movement automated. Therefore, the actions of attacking, and guarding are all done for the player. In classic mode, the player’s ATB meter is filled through these automatic movements. Leaving the player with only the tactical mode options. Therefore, classic mode isn’t a true replica of the classic FF VII‘s gameplay. Classic mode is considered more of a difficulty option for players. In addition to normal and easy classic shows up as in an option in the difficulty settings.
