For the last few days, a rumor about a new Final Fantasy spinoff has been swirling about on the internet. And Fanbyte might have an answer to that. According to the gaming site, Square Enix has enlisted the help of Koei Tecmo to make a new game called Final Fantasy Origin. It’s said to be an action game like Nioh or the Souls series but “more accessible for a wider audience” and takes place somewhere in the original NES Final Fantasy universe.

Fanbyte editor Imran Khan added that Final Fantasy Origin is set to be one of Square Enix’s main attractions at their upcoming E3 2021 presentation. However, several “large chunks” of the plan have leaked out. The game will launch for the PlayStation 5 first while a PC release follows later. It’s not known whether it is a timed exclusive deal like Final Fantasy VII Remake or not. The Japanese publisher also hopes to release a public demo this summer. Similar to how Nioh‘s public demos work, they are made to solicit gameplay feedback from players while the game is still being developed. Each demo also has its own title, with the first one being called Stranger in Paradise.

This is not the first time Koei Tecmo handled a game from this series. Previously, Koei Tecmo in-house developer Team Ninja, the one’s behind Nioh and Ninja Gaiden series, worked on the multiplayer fighting game Dissidia NT. Team Ninja is said to be the one responsible for developing Final Fantasy Origin as well.
