The Father of the Bride cast was reunited for the first time in 25 years by Netflix for what was called Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish).
Bringing a rush of nostalgia, the cast of Nancy Meyer’s 1991 film Father of the Bride came together with Netflix’s YouTube channel to broadcast a part 3(ish) to fans for a good cause. On Thursday, the streaming service teased the reunion beginning with a tweet of a video that seemed to include an email invite from youngest Banks sibling Matty (Culkin) to his family for a Zoom meeting with the message “Something is coming.”.
The 25-minute reunion, written and directed by Meyers, featured the entire Banks family from the original movies. This includes Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, George Newburn, and Martin Short. It was not only a feel-good trip down memory lane that replicated the decades-long familial comfort that the films provided audiences, but was also aimed to benefit the World Central Kitchen. They’re an organization providing meals to families during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The original film starring Kimberly Williams as Annie, the daughter of Steve Martin and Diane Keaton’s characters, and the bride of an overprotective father who doesn’t want to give her away. In the 1995 sequel, Keaton’s Nina Banks gave birth at the same time as her daughter. Now, 25 years later, the special sequel, introduced by Reese Witherspoon, sees the Banks Family come together again, this time for a wedding-related announcement via a Zoom call.
The storyline centers around the youngest Banks sibling, Matty, played by Kieran Culkin, who reveals to his family that he’d like to forgo their plans for a big wedding in Tuscany and surprise his fiancé Rachel (X-Men’s Alexandra Shipp) with a Zoom wedding. Martin’s George Banks is shocked and a little disapproving but, once the rest of his family gets on board, he decides to roll with it.
The reunion also featured Robert De Niro making a special appearance as Rachel’s father, with De Niro and Martin engaging in some awkwardly hilarious antics between them. Making the endearing reunion a little more special and nostalgic, George Banks’ voiceover played over his son’s marriage which was spliced with scenes from the original movies.
