For every one of you who disregarded the degradation that comes along with being a digital billboard for a game developing giant, the rest of us say, “thank you.” Because of you and your “Likes” of the Assassin’s Creed III Facebook page (Ubisoft employed a marketing campaign in which the game needed 1,776,000 Facebook likes/Tweets in order to release the new trailer), Ubisoft has decided to go ahead and release the world premiere Assassin’s Creed III gameplay trailer, and boy does it look pretty.
The trailer gives fans their first real look at the series’ new protagonist, Connor Ratohnhaké:ton. The Native American Assassin has been fairly enigmatic to this point. Why does he feel compelled to involve himself in the American Revolution? What are his ties to the Assassins? Though we won’t be given complete answers until the game is finally released this Fall, the new gameplay trailer will definitely do well to whet the appetites of franchise fans.
We see Ratohnhaké:ton and the new movement system in action as he leaps from tree to tree, stalking his target and even setting traps for large groups of enemies. Case in point: trees will be one of your best assets in staying hidden and gaining a vantage point. The trailer also shows off the massive scale that defined the landscapes of Revolutionary War battlefields. Smoke from musket fire and bodies scattered across a field of snow colored red by the brutality highlight the viciousness with which this war was fought. It’s definitely worth noting that through Ratohnhaké:ton’s dialogue, we learn that our new protagonist has no allegiance to either side. So, aside from getting your fill of killing oppressive, empire-minded Redcoats, you’ll also have to slay a few rebellious colonists as well.
