Throughout human history, strange happenings and encounters with unknown creatures have been reported as early as the 1800s. Then, many years later in 1950, encounters with strange creatures started to ramp up giving rise to a pseudoscience called Cryptozoology. After this, every strange creature such as Bigfoot, Swamp Beast, Moth Man, and more have been categorized as cryptids.
Like our world, the world of Fallout, more specifically Fallout 76 is also haunted by unknown creatures called cryptids that prey on humanity’s remnants, or at least what’s left of them. Fallout 76 The Wendigo: Real World Folklore Overview.
Wendigos are a warning and a reminder of humanity’s darkest capabilities, they also originate from Algonquian Native American folklore. These creatures have multiple interpretations and stories that tell of what exactly these beings are. With the most popular of the stories, stating that humans turn into these creatures after resorting to cannibalism.
After which they are presumably overtaken by evil spirits turning them into something horrific often described with yellowish decaying skin, long nails, and fangs. Wendigos also make an appearance as an enemy with several variants in In Fallout 76 with the most recent of them being added with the Wasterlanders update. Fallout 76 Wendigo Lore
Staying true to the original tale from our world, wendigos are rumored to be the result of those who commit the atrocity of cannibalism in Fallout 76. Furthermore, it has been said that all existing wendigos currently roaming the wastes of post-war Appalachia are all descendants from one creature known as the Progenitor Wendigo.

This creature was once a human called Morris Stevens who was once the leader of a raider tribe of cannibals called the Gourmands, which once terrorized the Savaged Divide region in Fallout 76. However, such is life now in the ruins of the old world, things turned for the worst for this group of cannibalistic sycophants.
The day came when the Gourmands made a troubling discovery that in fact, their leader had broken their cardinal rule of “do not eat other members of the gang” so thereupon, learning this turned on him and kicked him out of the raider gang. So in exile Morris left and took his wife Edie Stevens and found refuge in a cave that ironically will be later known as the “wendigo cave”.
The couple soon made this cave their home, and for a time things were alright, Morris would even go out hunting regularly and brought back huge bounties of human meat for himself and his wife too, but she only received the scraps. For a while, this was the situation between the two, but Mr. Stevens kept getting greedier and hungrier as if eating the majority of the bounty brought from his expeditions weren’t enough to sate his seemly insatiable hunger.
This was the situation and how things carried on between the two, but both Mr. and Mrs. Stevens were slowly changing, but it was Morris Stevens who seemed to be undergoing the most severe of changes until one day in particular came. Already wrought with a hunger nothing could sate, Mr. Stevens finally gave to the hunger and murdered his wife and ate her.
What happened afterward is still shrouded within the myth, but it is believed that after the horrible act committed by Mr. Stevens, he soon was changed forever. Mr. Stevens was no longer human and had become the father of all Wendigos. However, the story is not yet over. Soon after Mr. Stevens’ transformation, he began hunting his former work associates to an ultimate point, that they soon placed a bounty on the Progenitor’s head. Despite the bounty, this would not save the remnants of the Gourmands as they were over the years wiped out through a combination of radiation and the scorched plague.
