KOEI TECMO America and developer GUST Studios have revealed five new playable characters for the upcoming Fairy Tail game.
These will be the ‘Sky God Slayer’ Sherria Blendy from Lamia Scale, the ‘Strongest Fencer’ Kagura Mikazuchi from Mermaid Heel, the ‘Handsome’ Blue Pegasus mage Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki, the ‘White Dragon’ Sting Eucliffe, and ‘Shadow Dragon’ Rogue Cheney from Sabertooth.
Together with the characters, ONE PR Studio also unveiled new features of the fight system.
The Unison Raid mode, for example, will see some characters unite together to perform mighty combination attacks, with unique cut-scenes for every combo.
Characters will also have “Awaken abilities”, which will be triggered when the whole party suffers heavy damage. Of course, Dragon Slayers’ Awakening would be in the form of “Dragon Force”, the embodiment of a dragon’s power onto his human counterpart.
Finally, teams will be able to build up a ‘Fairy Gauge’, which will ultimately result in a devastating final move.
In case you’re not familiar with the game, Fairy Tail is an upcoming JRPG based on the eponymous anime and manga by Hiro Mashima.
Battle parties consist of up to five mages, allowing characters to combine together to dominate the three-by-three grid battlefield.
In terms of the storyline, just last month, KOEI TECMO confirmed the title will include the Tenrou Island arc, the Grand Magic Games arc, and the Tartaros arc; together with other episodes from the original canon, which will also be playable to help characters bond while unlocking unique scenes in the game.
The yet-unnamed Fairy Tail game story will start during the time period around the guild’s near demise after the mysterious absence of Natsu’s party. The old fans of the saga will recognize this moment as the long anime break between 2014 and 2018.
The guild’s prestige has plunged in the years since they’ve been gone and is drowning in debt, but Natsu and his crew of mages are back and ready to rebuild their home.
This narrative element will take the form of a reward system that will see players going on missions and reporting to the guild to receive rewards.
Guild rank will increase or decrease depending on fame, on a scale from D to S. The higher the rank, the more challenging the mission, and the bigger the rewards.
KOEI TECMO has not yet revealed an official date for the game’s release, but it said it’s going to be available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC via Steam at some point in 2020.

Surely, with the anime now over, many fans will see in the upcoming Fairy Tail title a nostalgic way of reliving Natsu’s adventures. Or perhaps they will consider it over, and they will scorn the game as a marketing stunt.
