It is no surprise that Respawn Entertainment developers and Call of Duty creators Jason West and Vince Zampella are currently in the process of making a new shooter after their separation from Activision. This time around however, they’re taking the science fiction route. According to a report from CVG, EA games President Frank Gibeau said today at an E3 meeting that he would like to see the development of a game that could compete with shooter juggernauts like Halo and Gears of War.
“Titles like Respawn – and I think the Insomniac title is a little bit more of an action game than a pure shooter – we’ll sprinkle those in where we see opportunistic gaps, either in a release schedule or in a genre standpoint. Those typically are more sci-fi oriented shooters, where as the Medal of Honor and Battlefield brands are obviously more modern military oriented. So it allows us to pick and choose the best of the sci-fi shooters. It allows us to compete with things like Gears and Halo and put them on places in our release calendar where they’re not cannibalistic to the core business and that’s the essential strategy going forward.”
Though the space shooter genre is not too over-saturated just yet, catching up to franchises like Halo and Gears of War won’t be an easy task even for the minds behind the Call of Duty series. Gibeau stated that the project would be released when the company sees an “opportunistic window” for it, which is a pretty ambiguous phrase especially in this ever competitive industry.
