The teaser trailer for The Super Mario Bros Movie was released today, and it has fans excited to see their favorite Nintendo characters appear on the big screen. While there are still many things unknown about the movie, we do have nine confirmed cast members who are voicing characters in the movie. We will, of course, be seeing some iconic characters from the Super Mario franchise, but we will also get at least two other well-known characters from Nintendo’s game arsenal. To get you more excited about the movie, here are all the confirmed Nintendo characters who will appear in The Super Mario Bros Movie.
Mario
It goes without saying that The Super Mario Bros Movie needs feature the iconic Nintendo character. There was some surprise and even controversy when it was announced that the non-Italian Chris Pratt was set to take the role of the famous plumber, and it doesn’t seem like everyone is much happier now that they’ve heard Mario with his voice. Time will tell if Pratt’s voice grows among Nintendo fans.
Luigi
In the second half of Super Mario Bros, Luigi will be voiced by Charlie Day of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fame. Luigi appears in the trailer running towards a mansion, attempting to escape from a mob of ghost turtles, an obvious nod to the beloved Luigi’s Mansion games.
Bowser
Jack Black is lending his voice to Mario’s famous enemy, and based on what we hear in the trailer, he appears to be stealing the show. After the trailer was shown at New York Comic-Con, the Tenacious D rocker said, “I brought some of my heavy metal roots. In a way, Bowser is a big, strong, and scary rock star. I did a little bit of rocking. I think you’ll be surprised to see that Bowser has a musical side.” Pratt may divide some fans, but they all agree that Black is proving worthy of this role.
Toad
Schmigadoon! star Keegan-Michael Key is voicing Princess Peach’s loyal servant, Toad. In the trailer, he appears to serve as Mario’s guide to the Mushroom Kingdom.
Kamek
Bowser’s loyal follower Kamek appears in the teaser. While we don’t hear his voice, it has been confirmed Kevin Michael Richardson will play him.
Other Confirmed Nintendo Characters Have Not Appeared in ‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’ Teaser, and Photos Will Not Be Included
Princess Peach
A damsel in distress if there ever was one, Princess Peach will be voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, known for Peaky Blinders and The Witch.
Donkey Kong
The famous Nintendo character Donky Kong will appear in The Super Mario Bros Movie. Perhaps the most perfect casting choice, Seth Rogen will voice the barrel-throwing ape.
Cranky Kong
Cranky Kong, the elderly adviser to Donkey Kong in the games, will be voiced by former Saturday Night Live and Portlandia star Fred Armisen.
Foreman Spike
Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco will voice Foreman Spike, the foreman of Mario and Luigi’s workplace, in the 1984 game Wrecking Crew.
Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario and other characters in the franchise, will make cameo appearances in The Super Mario Bros Movie. However, it has not been disclosed which Nintendo characters he is playing.
