In a Twitter thread, the three-time Golden Globe nominee urged her followers not to date a man like Hopper in real life because his “extreme jealousy and violent rages” aren’t befitting of an ideal partner. “Yes I am aware it’s just a show’ and it’s set ‘in the 80s’ even though this stuff was unacceptable then too, but that’s exactly my point,” she made sure to add in a follow-up tweet. “Its just a show and this is a gentle reminder not to fall for this crap in real life.”

While the tweets were posted last Friday, the day after Stranger Things 3 premiered, the backlash did not manifest itself until yesterday. It appears as though after major media outlets like People Magazine started suddenly covering it, that is when the backlash against Wood from die-hard Stranger Things fans surfaced. As a result, the three-time Emmy nominee has spent much of her time on Twitter today clapping back at fans criticizing her criticisms.
In Wood’s defense, Hopper wasn’t always a model citizen. This new season sees him threaten Mike Wheeler, a child, to stop him from dating his adoptive daughter, Eleven, all while romancing a grieving mother in Joyce Byers, played by Winona Ryder. His journey from flawed character to bonafide hero has made for some compelling viewing, but dating a guy like that sounds like a nightmare.
