Flamin’ Hot will be Eva Longoria’s directorial debut with the origin story of how Flamin’ Hot Cheetos came to be! This is real, April 1 was about a month ago. Flamin’ Hot, as it is aptly named, is being produced by Searchlight Pictures & Franklin Entertainment. According to Deadline the brunt of the writing was handled by Lewis Colick but will be revised by Linda Yvette Chavez. As a big fan of the product and having heard about this movie possibly happening years ago, I am red hot with excitement.
Flamin’ Hot will focus on Richard Montanez, who worked as a janitor at Frito Lays. He used his Mexican heritage to infuse a bit of kick to the also delicious, standard Cheetos. You could argue that he revolutionized the chip game, as you can’t go anywhere now without seeing something integrating that deep red flavor into their products.
Eva Longoria brought aboard Linda Yvette Chavez after her successful run as showrunner for Netflix’s Gentefied. Chavez is also adapting the book by Erica Sanchez, I Am Not Your Perfect Daughter, for Netflix.
Jesse Garcia will be playing Richard Montanez in Flamin’ Hot. You may remember him recently from Narcos: Mexico. With Annie Gonzalez, who recently worked with Linda Yvette Chavez on Gentefied, playing his wife.
Not a lot of details in regards to the story. I guess that there will be some pushback to the idea, from the executives, possibly due to his race. You need drama and stakes to have a great story, so there is going to be some resistance to the idea. Richard will have hurdles he will have to leap over to get this phenomenon in our mouths. I tend to think of this as The Founder, the one where Micheal Keaton plays the founder (get it) of McDonald’s. Obviously not the same but they both faced pushback in the food industry. So, I mean, it’s kinda similar but we will have to wait and see what other details arise.
