Escapade, the Marvel hero who debuted in Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1, is getting more “page” time. This October, Charlie Jane Anders and Alberto Alburquerque team up for a three-issue guest arc for New Mutants starring Shela Sexton, AKA Escapade. After her debut last month, fans can’t get enough of the fascinating powers, inspiring backstory, and colorful cast of characters that Escapade introduced. Now, the hero will return, beginning in New Mutants #31.
What Can We Expect From Escapade?
Nebula Award-winning author Charlie Jane Anders is teaming up with Alberto Alburquerque to return to Escapade’s story. The three-issue arc focuses on Shela Sexton, AKA Escapade, and her coming to terms with her mutant powers. However, it also features comic strips drawn by Escapade’s co-creators, Ro Stein and Ted Brandt. These strips further solidify Escapade’s place in the X-Men universe.
Meanwhile, the comic issues feature Escapade as she joins the New Mutants to learn how to control her powers. Hopefully, she can master her “swapping” abilities in time to prevent Destiny’s prophecy from coming true. It all kicks off when Emma Frost personally recruits Shela to join her fellow mutants on Krakoa. Emma assures Escapade that her moving to the island is to prevent the death of her best friend, Morgan Red. However, can Emma Frost be trusted?
Getting to Know A New Hero
In June, Shela Sexton made her Marvel debut as Escapade in Marvel’s Voices: Pride #1. She is a trans mutant with the ability to swap circumstances with another person. As Anders describes it, “if you’re holding her at gunpoint, she can reverse it, so she’s holding you at gunpoint.” In her inaugural run, she teamed up with fellow trans mutant and best friend Morgan Red for an adventure of a lifetime.
Many of Shela Sexton’s origin story deals with “chosen family,” which will continue in her time spent on Krakoa. Will the New Mutants accept her? Will any of the mutants on the island be welcoming? Or is everyone just using her for what she can do?
This wild ride kicks off in New Mutants #31 on sale in October.
