Veteran actor Ernie Hudson has officially revealed that he will be reprising his role as Winston Zeddemore in the upcoming Ghostbusters movie set for 2020 directed by Jason Reitman. This comes soon after a similar announcement made by Dan Aykroyd that he will be reprising his role as Raymond Stantz.
The Ghostbusters franchise has had many ups an downs over the years, with different TV, video game, and of course, film efforts all vastly varying in quality. The original film form 1984 is considered by many to be a comedy classic, while the sequel Ghostbusters II is often seen as a lesser follow-up, and outright bad according to others. The Real Ghostbusters was a robust cartoon adaptation of the property that greatly expanded on the possibilities of the ghostly premise and ran for five years from 1986 to 1991, which also promoted a highly successful and creative toy-line.
It’s also worth remembering the absolute insanity that surrounded the 2016 reboot of the franchise simply called Ghostbusters. The 2016 movie promptly set the entire internet on fire for months both before and after it came out, with numerous controversies surrounding the film’s terrible trailer, the director Paul Feig’s response to said trailer, the mixed to poor response of the film itself, and many heated discussions regarding gender politics. It was then quite surprising to see that a new film in the franchise that seemed to avoid the continuity of the previous installment was being announced in early 2019, with details still now slowly emerging.
From what we currently know about the plot of the upcoming film, it seems to be a story focused on a new set of characters in a small town, which removes the franchise for the first time from it’s longtime home of New York City, in which a small family will learn new secrets about themselves and the town as mysterious circumstances happen around them. It will star Carrie Coon as a single mother with two children, played by Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace. Paul Rudd will play a local school teacher who will presumably become entangled with the family at some point.
The currently untitled Ghostbusters sequel is planned for release sometime in 2020.
