Epic Games is about to face a class-action lawsuit. Originally reported by Polygon, new information has come to light today via a Gamesindustry.biz article.
The data breach of last year is the focus of the suit. This breach revolves around the wildly popular Fortnite and involves a vulnerability in their security. This issue may have led to hackers being able to access players’ personal information and payment details.
Who is Handling the Epic Games Lawsuit?
The lawsuit is being handled by the firm Franklin D. Azar & Associates, who are calling for anyone who may have been affected to rally around the suit.
The basis for this case is the time-frame in which Epic acknowledged the issue in their security. While the company spoke publicly about the fix earlier this year, it was two months prior that Epic received the report that this breach had occurred. Therefore, FDAzar believes users deserve compensation.
The law firm has gone on to write about this suit:
This is a major inconvenience for the user. Epic should not have allowed this to happen, which suggests a carelessness to their approach to security in Fortnite.
A loss of trust is the take away here. An uncertainty that a user’s personal information is safe in the hands of Epic Games. Therefore, the firm desires to compensate those affected as well as to demonstrate a deterrent to Epic. Whatever the outcome, Epic Games may think twice before staying quiet on a matter like this again.
