When a game like Fortnite earns you as much money as it does for Epic Games, I guess you can’t blame them for using some of that money to splash out on a new campus to become your new global headquarters. The location in question, the Cary Towne Center complex in Cary, North Carolina, cost an estimated $95 million to buy and is planned to be revitalized in Epic’s new global headquarters planned for completion by 2024.

The Cary Towne Center used to be a mall, and a massive one at that, with 87 acres being the equivalent of 50 football fields. Work is scheduled to begin this year, and the three-year plan will see a complete renovation of the site, “allowing Epic the flexibility to create a campus customized from the ground-up to accommodate its long-term growth.”, according to Epic themselves. The campus will include both office spaces and recreational areas. It will be bought from the previous owners Turnbridge Equities and Denali Properties, who themselves only bought the site in 2019 for around $35 million and had plans of their own before they sold to Epic.

Epic Games have been located in Cary for over two decades, and this commitment further strengthens their ties to the region. The mayor of Cary, Harold Weinbrecht, said in a statement:

Epic has certainly been able to count on the money raked in by Fortnite in this purchase, which has been a pillar in a massive rise for the company. They created a storefront that would rival Steam (that is currently having a holiday sale), developed a next-gen engine in Unreal 5, and have also recently invested $15 million in Manticore Games.
