Now that Elden Ring has received an official release date for January next year, the Internet’s hype has already skyrocketed off into another dimension. But seven months is a long time, so in the meantime, we’ll just have to keep ourselves occupied with other “Souls-y” games to keep our “iframe” reflexes in check. What better contender for our soulslike fix this Summer than the upcoming brutal, fast-paced boss-rush indie, Eldest Souls. Developed by Fallen Flag Studios and published by United Label, Eldest Souls is an epic and challenging pixelated adventure with boss battling being the core focus of its gameplay. Eldest Souls will release digitally on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on July 29.

The world is in ruins, for the Old Gods have unleashed a great Desolation across the lands that devasted the soil and dried up the rivers. These vile supernatural deities cannot go unpunished, so it’s high time to wield our Obsydian sword buster sword because we “gotta slay’em all.” While the main feature of Eldest Souls is its boss encounters, the game also provides a fleshed-out experience. As a lone warrior, you’ll explore the winding passages of the Citadel, meet intriguing NPCs, be given compelling questlines, and uncover dark and grim mysteries.

Like any soulslike dark fantasy title, the combat is far from forgiving. Eldest Souls will make sure you become well-acquainted with death; however, those who survive the onslaught of gruesome fights and vicious boss battles will be awarded powers of superman might. Vanquishing each powerful foe will grant you access to unlocking a vast array of unique talents and abilities. The combat is anything but repetitive, as you’ll be able to customize accordingly to a style that fits you from a plethora of combinations.

Eldest Souls also looks graphically magnificent. Whether you’re a fan of pixel art or not, you can’t deny that the dark environments and somber world of the Citadel are visually stunning. There’s a high level of quality here, and Fallen Flag has made sure to painstakingly pay close attention to detail throughout Eldest Souls’ design.
