During the Microsoft press conference at E3 2019, we got our first glimpse of Elden Ring. A collaborative project between From Software and George R.R. Martin, the game dives deep into the type of dark fantasy world that we have grown to expect from recent Miyazaki projects. An interview with Miyazaki has appeared on the Xbox website, where he talks about the development process of the game, and what he hopes to achieve with the project.

“Unlike Sekiro, which has a heavy focus on action, Elden Ring puts more focus on RPG elements.”, Miyazaki said when asked about the genre of the game he felt best described Elden Ring, “Of course, we are not shying away from the fun of responsive melee-based combat, and these elements will be present as well.”

For people who missed the more in-depth combat options in gameplay when it came to Sekiro and its single weapon focus, there is even more good news. “Earlier I had said that this title focuses more heavily on RPG elements. This title will include a wide variety of weapons, magic, and ways to engage enemies, that make it possible to provide users with a style of gameplay and strategy that suits them.”, Miyazaki said, “Even when compared to the Dark Souls series, I believe this title will provide even more variety in the ways for players to overcome challenges and tweak their tactics when facing enemies.”

For people who have been curious about kind of involvement Martin has had with the game, it would seem that he has written to the overarching mythos of the game world. As a big fan of his work, Miyazaki and From Software approached him about possibly working together, and assumed that Martin would turn down such an offer. To their surprise, they got the chance to meet with him, which apparently led to a very passionate and stimulating conversation, and so the project was born.

The interview is very interesting, and people who are excited for Elden Ring should definitely take the time to read it.
