One of the most welcome additions to the Souls formula in Elden Ring is the Ash Spirits. These Spirits are summonable NPCs that can aid you in battle, each with unique weapons and ways to approach combat. Some even have their own side quests for you to complete! Not only can they be a great help when players hit a wall in the world or at a boss, but they can also be leveled up, meaning that if a player wants them to be, these Spirits can also be as crucial to their build as their weapons and armor. A particular NPC needs a specific item type to level them up, so let me explain both of them. This guide will show players how to upgrade Spirit Ash summons in Elden Ring.
How To Upgrade Spirit Ash Summons In Elden Ring
Players that wish to upgrade their Spirit Ashes are going to need to enlist the help of an NPC named Roderika, who can be found in Limgrave at the Stormhill Shack to the right of the giant gate next to Gatefront Ruins. Talk to her until you exhaust her dialogue to receive the Sitting Sideways gesture and the Spirt Jellyfish Ashes. You will also learn about You can find Chrytalids’ Memento atop a mount of corpses in Rampart Tower of Stormveil Castle. Bringing this item back to Roderika is not necessary in order to get here to upgrade your Spirit Ashes, but doing so will get her to the Roundtable Hold quicker and will reward you with a Golden Seed, an item used to upgrade your Flash. Either return the item to Roderika or go to a Site of Grace in Liurnia of the Lake. Doing either will progress her quest to the Roundtable Hold, where you will find her standing in front of the fireplace of the main hall. Once at the Hold, you cannot give her the Memento, so make sure to do it if you want the Seed Reward.
Once at the Hold, talk to Roderika until you exhaust her dialogue again. She will mention that she would like to aid you in spirit-tuning but will need Smithing Master Hewg’s help to do so. Go and speak to Hewg in the room behind her and select the option “About Roderika.” Exhaust this dialogue and then return to Roderika and talk to her again. Just to make sure everything is good, go talk to Hewg one more time about Roderika. With all that covered, reload the area, and Roderika should have set up shop across from Hewg. Talking to her will allow you to upgrade your Spirit Ashes summons.

In order to upgrade your Spirits, you will need to find yourself some Grave Gloveworts/Ghost Gloveworts and Runes to upgrade these Spirit Ashes. There are several locations where you can find these Gloveworts, with them being found in Catacombs such as Impaler’s and Deathtounced Catacombs in Limgrave as well as Black Knife Catacombs in Liurnia. These are just of the few areas that you can find them, with players able to buy Grave Gloverworts 1-3 from the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold by finding the Glovewort Picker’s Bell Bearing [1]. This item can be found in the Wyndham Catacombs behind the Ruins of the same name in the Altus Plateau near Mt. Gelmir. Defeat the boss of these Catacombs and bring the Bell Bearing to the Husks to buy these Gloveworts. As you explore the world, you will be able to find other Bearings and higher-level Gloverworts, but this is enough for you to start your process of upgrading your Ash Spirit summons in Elden Ring.
