There are seven major bosses in Elden Ring that will provide you with Great Runes, items that seemingly hold unbelievable power. While taking down the bosses with these Great Runes are already a significant undertaking, defeating them does not mean that you will be able to use their power immediately. There is a process that players will need to go through to power these Great Runes fully and use them in the journey to becoming Elden Lord. This guide will explain how to activate Great Runes in Elden Ring.

How to Activate Great Runes In Elden Ring

When you defeat a boss with a Great Rune, you will have the Rune added to your inventory under key items. There will also be a section dedicated to the items at Sites of Grace simply called “Great Runes.” You will find the Great Runes to be greyed out and unusable upon getting them. This is because you must restore power to the Rune before it can provide its abilities to the player. You can restore the power to these Great Runes by traveling to the Divine Towers found across the Lands Between. You can go into your inventory and read the description of the Great Rune to figure out which Divine Tower you need to go to restore the specific Great Runes.

Once you restore the power of a Great Rune, you can equip the Rune at a Site of Grace. Once you have the Great Rune equipped, you will finally need to use a Rune Arc, an item that can be found throughout the world. This will provide you with bonuses tied to the Great Rune you have equipped for that life. You will need to use another Rune Arc upon respawn.

Elden Ring is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
