Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt may be returning for the sequel to the sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow (otherwise known as Live, Die, Repeat). The follow-up to Warner Bros. 2014 film will reportedly be written by Matthew Robinson.
Variety is reporting Robinson pitched a script to the team and is being brought on to write it. Though it is extremely early to get an idea of a concept at this point, Warner Bros. is looking to bring back Doug Liman, director of the first movie.
Edge of Tomorrow is a Groundhog Day story of a soldier, played by Mission Impossible lead, Tom Cruise, who relives the same day over and over again while fighting aliens.
The film brought in $370.5 million worldwide at the box-office, grossing $100.2 million in the United States. The movie is based on the Japanese novel “All You Need Is Kill,” by writer Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s.
It remains to be seen if Cruise and Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, The Young Victoria) will return as their characters Cage and Rita. While they are expected to sign on to be a part of the movie, there is no official contract or script for that matter. Reports state the sequel has been in the works two years after the release of Edge of Tomorrow. It’s being produced by Erwin Stoff, Tom Lassally, and Masi Oka.
Liman has been busy since the 2014 release. He’s filled the time by being an executive producer on the television series Covert Affairs, Jason Bourne, and Suits. IMDB has a post for the upcoming sequel titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat with a vague description of the movie,
Crews were meant to start on the sequel in 2018, but a post on IMDB says Blunt admitted filming the movie Mary Poppins Returns, delayed production.
