The first season of Edens Zero first premiered in Japan in April 2021. It aired for 25 overall episodes. The show then began streaming on Netflix outside of Japan in August 2021. One of the most notable things about Edens Zero is that it premiered during the very popular (and highly regarded) Spring 2021 anime lineup. The anime was able to create its own niche of fans alongside heavy-hitters like Odd Taxi, Fruits Baskets, Tokyo Revengers, Megalo Box: Nomad, and My Hero Academia season 5.
Shinji Ishihara (Fairy Tail, Log Horizon) was the chief director of the Edens Zero anime. Hiro Mashima (Fairy Tail, Rave Master) launched the manga in Weekly Shonen Magazine in June 2018 while his most popular series Fairy Tail was wrapping up. Kodansha Comics then published the manga in both digital format and in print.
‘Edens Zero’ Season 2: Hiro Mashima’s Next Staple in the Anime Community
The story for Edens Zero is described as:
“At Granbell Kingdom, an abandoned amusement park, Shiki has lived his entire life among machines. But one day, Rebecca and her cat companion Happy appear at the park’s front gates. Little do these newcomers know that this is the first human contact Granbell has had in a hundred years! As Shiki stumbles his way into making new friends, his former neighbors stir at an opportunity for robo-rebellion… and when his old homeland becomes too dangerous, Shiki must join Rebecca and Happy on their space escape into the boundless cosmos.”
Edens Zero is Hiro Mashima’s third major shonen manga. His other titles include Fairy Tail and Rave Master. The announcement for the Edens Zero manga series was made on the last day of 2017. Five months later, his series finally made its manga debut. Mashima claimed that the idea of a space fantasy manga would create an exciting challenge for him, given the genre’s lack of popularity. In the afterwords of volume 3, he describes Edens Zero as a cross of both Fairy Tail and Rave Master.
Edens Zero season 2 will premiere in 2023.
