Monster became a huge hit for Netflix and Ryan Murphy. The popularity of the Jeffrey Dahmer Netflix series inspired a surge of costumes of the killer to go up on eBay. BuzzFeed has confirmed that the site has put up a ban on the sale of costumes for violating its policy on violence and violent criminals. The policy covers anything that will “promote or glorify violence,” along with anything violent criminals from within the last 100 years.

While some listings were up on eBay for Jeffrey Dahmer costumes, the site was actively taking them down. The items based on the show that saw Evan Peters portray one of America’s most infamous serial killers included an orange jumpsuit with a mask of the American Horror Story actor and glasses similar to what the real killer wore.

eBay takes stand against Jeffrey Dahmer costumes inspired by Netflix series

The killer murdered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. He had dismembered them and performed acts of experimentation on their bodies, necrophilia, and cannibalism. He received a life sentence in 1992. In 1994, after bragging about what he had done, inmate Christopher Scarver beat him to death.

Ryan Murphy of American Horror Story and American Crime Story fame created the Netflix series. It became one of the streamer’s biggest hits, which renewed interest in the American serial killer, leading to the eBay costumes on Jeffrey Dahmer. It starred Peters, Richard Jenkins, Molly Ringwald (Riverdale), and Niecy Nash (Reno 911!). While receiving attention from audiences, it received criticism from the victims’ families, who were not talked to before the show went into production. They found out the series was being made when the rest of the world did through news articles and trailers.
